When southpaw, DeMarcus Corley, got the call last Thursday to face once-beaten, Freddy Hernandez, of Lynwood, Calif., in Friday night’s Showtime-televised, welterweight (147 pounds) main event, the 35-year-old former WBO junior welterweight (140 pounds) king said he was already in tip-top shape.

And that’s not just because Corley was training before his scheduled fight with Hernandez was bumped from the undercard of last Friday’s matchup featuring former Kazakhstan Olympian Beibut Shumenov, who dethroned southpaw, WBA light heavyweight (175 pounds) champion, Gabriel Campillo, of Spain, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

“It’s because I don’t abuse my body, and I never did. I have a lot left in me. I always stayed within four pounds of the weight-limit that I fight at, and I don’t smoke, drink or run the streets at night,” said Corley, a Washington, D.C., resident whose bout with the 30-year-old Hernandez ((27-1, 18 knockouts) will be televised on ShoBox from the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif.

“My body is 35 years old, but on the inside, I feel like my body is 25, and that I can perform at the level of a 25-year-old fighter,” said Corley. “After fighters win big fights, they go out and they stay out of the gym for two and three weeks before they get back into the gym and start training to prepare for another fight. After I fight, I take 48 hours off, and then I’m back in the gym working again. And I don’t abuse my body.”

Nicknamed “Chop Chop,” Corley is 36-12-1, with 21 KOs entering this welterweight (147 pounds) matchup with Hernandez, who has won 10 straight, including four by knockout, since losing a split-decision to Golden Johnson in Feburary of 2005.

“I don’t know much about Freddy Hernandez. He’s a welterweight, I’m a super lightweight,” said Corley, who earned the WBO 140-pound title with a first-round KO of Felix Flores in June of 2001, and defended it twice.

“This the ending chapter of my life in boxing,” said Corley, who is coming off of November’s split-decision loss to Fariz Kazimov, which ended a three-fight winning streak. “I’m ready to go out on top and become world champion again, and then move on to something else, because I’m 35, going on 36.”

Corley has lost in big fights to former world champions, Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto and Zab Judah.

One bout after being dethroned by Judah in July of 2003, Corley lost a May of 2009 unanimous decision to Mayweather but not before wobbling the undefeated fighter with a hard, overhand right in the fourth round.
