2010 Road Closures In Vancouver

By admin, December 20, 2009 4:08 am

How Has Your Firm Prepared for the Upcoming Olympics?

Several local Lower Mainland businesses are anticipating the challenges created by both vehicular and transit traffic congestion, and are considering offering even more flexibility in terms of hours of operation in an effort to address these and other impending issues. Telecommuting during this time period will likely be commonplace for the downtown core offices. Obviously, other than traffic problems, other factors, such as road closures, demonstrations, political rallies, etc., will heavily influence the ability to get around all areas of the City prior to and during the upcoming Olympics in Whistler, BC. Vancouver Centre, as the Host City, will be heavily impacted during this 17-day event, which is arriving shortly, and officially commences February 12th, 2010.

The Games of course introduce tremendous business opportunities for our local firms, such that has not been witnessed since the BC World’s Fair of Expo ’86. This event is an unprecedented opportunity to market BC as a ‘global business’ destination.

It would seem logical then that many of the downtown core firms could experience an abnormal level of absenteeism, as well as a staffing shortage due to vacations specifically scheduled around this period. Therefore, it suggests that outsourcing for temporary help is likely to substantially increase, although ‘cross-training’ for those that will be absent during this period is likely underway. While this may be the case, it should still provide opportunities for contract and temporary workers to secure work, which will likely result in some firms bringing on new talent on a permanent or long-term basis. This is very encouraging for job seekers and the independent contractors, such as myself.

Prior to, and during the Games, your firm may have scheduled hosting of corporate VIPs, their business partners, top existing clients, as well as potential new clients. What an opportunity we have to share and proudly offer the gift of the Games in our own City. Vancouver, Whistler, and all areas of the Lower Mainland, as well as all of our beautiful BC communities, will be sparkling with tears of joy and honour during our ‘Show on the World Stage’.

If your firm are not representing the Games as a Sponsor, there is still opportunity to get involved. The 2010 Commerce Centre is encouraging businesses to connect with visitors, and take advantage of the procurement opportunities, which will likely be available during this period. Our local businesses are encouraged to post their company profile and register free of charge.
