Article 99 Wiki

Gen question – Boomers 46-64 (19 yrs), Gen X 65-82 (17 yrs), Gen Y 83-99 (19 yrs), Millenials 00- About right?
I was reading an article recently that referred to a 29 year old as Gen Y – That means they were born in 78 or 79. Wiki says that Gen Y was from 78 – 95. If Gen X was from 65-77, that’s only 13 years, and Gen Y would be 18 years. I thought the Millenials started in 2000. If they started in 96, they’re going to turn 12 this year.
No wonder the Boomers are called this huge generation – 19 years vs 13 years is a 50% difference!
If Gen Y started in 1978, and the pattern holds, the Millenials are done this year (96-08, 13 years). Doesn’t make sense.
Why not just get rid of Gen X, and call Boomers 46 – 69 (24 yrs), Gen Y 70 – 94 (25 yrs), and Millenials 95 – 19 (25 yrs)?
they have the breakdown they have because each age group exhibits certain characteristics, and has experienced similar things in growing up, separate from what the other groups experienced.
and the boomers are 1/3 the population of the US.
not just a lot of people, but a huge effect on jobs, buildings, health services… you name it.
Gen X for example – got worn out schools; when they started looking for jobs, the jobs were filled with all those boomers, and a Gen y needed a college degree for things that boomers could have gotten jobs with only a HS degree.
When Gen Xers started to buy houses, the costs were much higher, and the down payment higher, because the baby boomers had already bought “starter” houses.
so in terms of experience, mixing half the Gen xers with the baby boom and half with the Gen Yers looses much of the value of the labels. The number of years isn’t the important thing – the common experiences that link the members of each group is what the group members are linked.
If you want to know about ALL the effects of the Baby boom in the US, the best book is called
“Great Expectations” though i can’t remember the subtitle.
it is probably classed as sociology.
