Definite/indefinite article (English)?

Which article is right here: “Before applying for the/a job you have to compose a letter, containing … (resume)”? It’s just an exercise for English lesson, without any context.

a job = any job. common statement about what you should usually do.

the job = a job we just mentioned or spoke about. Use “the” when you can also use “that”.
